The Official Santa’s-Not-Real Convo

Written by Amy on February 6th, 2010 at 9:00 pm

So it finally happened.  Santa died.  Here’s how it went down.

The big topic of conversation around the house today has been buying the girls a power wheels Barbie jeep.  We even went to look at them at WalMart this afternoon just for them to see which they might be interested in getting.  Upon finding out they are $300 I explained that we would not be buying one there and we might find one that someone has for sale.  Lexi had a suggestion I would love to see work out: “I know!  We need to find somebody that’s rich that doesn’t want their money!”  If only!

So this evening, devoid of rich people throwing their money away, we searched craigslist and were able to find a few in the area available.  So the bedtime conversation consisted of WHEN they were going to get these.  I said it was still a little cold to be outside riding them so maybe Easter would be a great time to get a present like that.  And this is where we drop in.

Emma: Do you remember last Easter when you surprised me with my bike?

Me: Yep.

Emma: The Easter bunny isn’t real is he?

Me: No. (thankful to have that one off the list)

Emma: Santa’s not real either?

Me: No. *pause*  How did you know that? Was that a guess?

Emma: Yes.

(whoops!)

Me: Oh, well, I’m sorry but he’s not real.

Lexi: The tooth fairy either right?

Me: No, not the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny or Santa.

Lexi: So who does the presents?

Me: Me and Daddy.  We bought your Nintendo DS’s at Walmart.  And we ate the cookies and milk.

Lexi: And who puts the money under the pillow?

Me: Me and Daddy.

Emma: So how do you get under there without waking us up?

I demonstrate sneaking under the pillow which they find amusing.

Lexi, with her little mommy voice on, serious but joking all at the same time: You should be ashamed of yourself!

Me: Why? We were just pretending for a while.

Lexi: Because you were lying for too long!

Me: I’m sorry, I thought you would be mad if you knew Santa wasn’t real.

Lexi: It’s not nice. You lied!

More apologies and an explanation of course that God and Jesus WERE real which was met with basically a “Duh, Mom” reaction.

Emma seemed pretty unphased by all of it.  It surprises me Lexi was more mad that we lied versus that any mascots, as Emma calls them, are not real.  Kids surprise you sometimes.

So it’s done.  They’re all dead.  The lying’s done and I’m relieved.

Just Stop All This Growing Up, Missy

Written by Amy on January 19th, 2010 at 10:30 am

Emma (yelling from the bathroom after school one day): There’s this boy in my class that likes me….and I like him back.

Me: What’s his name?

Emma: Drew.

Later I find on a piece of paper where one of Emma’s friends has written about them liking each other. I think Lexi mentions that Emma has a boyfriend.

Me: Is Drew your boyfriend?

Emma: Maybe it’s true.  Would you let me?

Me: I think you’re a little young for a boyfriend (Like TWENTY YEARS too young!)

———————————————————————-

Emma and I are in the van on the way to pick Lexi up from school.

Emma: The TRUTH!  Is the tooth fairy real?

Me: *sigh* No, she’s not.

Emma: So you just take my tooth and put money there don’t you?

Me: Yep, Mommy and Daddy just pretend we are the tooth fairy.

Emma: I’m going to wake up and see you guys next time I lose a tooth!

———————————————————————-

This seems to be just smidgen of all the little ways she’s growing up!  Make it stop!

Gymnastics Day 1

Written by Amy on January 7th, 2010 at 9:48 pm

So today was the girls’ big gymnastics debut.  I feel a little behind on the whole organized sports/activities at 5 and 7 but really, they haven’t begged to do anything and if they aren’t 110% in it, why spend the money?  Since they both seemed ecstatic about it back in December, I forked over the money for 8 weeks of lessons and two new leotards and there we went.

The good news?  My frugalness patience paid off because both the girls had a BLAST tonight.  None of the shyness showed up one bit, even for a second.  It probably helped my face was stuck to the glass the entire time but still.  They weren’t stuck to me and there were no tears.  Well, once there were tears when Emma fell back into a chair in the waiting room but that’s neither here nor there I suppose.

You could tell neither of them really had NO idea what to do but I was proud they were actively listening to the teacher and just following the other girls around them who had obviously been in gymnastics for at least a previous round or two.  Several times I saw a little girl instruct Emma.  Lexi several times went to her teacher when she didn’t know how to do something.  For example, Lexi was trying to do a handstand against the padded wall and y’all, if I showed you the video, I know it would make rounds on YouTube but she kept butting her head into the pad instead of tucking it under before she threw her legs up.  But she kept trying and when the little girl beside her couldn’t help her, she had no problems asking the teacher who was helping other girls do a back bend.  Thankfully, the teachers both seemed very responsive.

Emma did floor work, uneven bars and the long jumpy thing.  They don’t have it in the Olympics so I’m at a loss for names here.  Lexi did floor work, balance beam and the vault.

They were happy to watch each other during the times when their classes didn’t overlap.  Unfortunately I couldn’t get two classes exactly at the same time so if I hang around the gym for both classes, I’m there for two hours!

I SO want to show everyone the video of the two of them.  I can’t help but be so proud of them even if they’re pretty clueless just beginners right now.  At least they’re getting out there and trying.  I just don’t feel comfortable posting a video with about 75 other little girls in leotards.  I did crop some pictures.  They’re bad first because they were all taken behind a glass wall and second because they were cropped so tightly to avoid any other children in them.  Anyway, I hope it at least gives you a little idea of their time tonight.

Christmas 2009

Written by Amy on December 26th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

Totes, do you need a model?

We had a lovely Christmas Eve/Christmas with our families.  We spent Christmas Eve at Scott’s parents, Christmas morning at home and the afternoon at my parents.

I was worried this year Emma (and consequently Lexi) would figure everything about Santa out.  But the only question she had regarding that on Christmas morning was whether Santa and the reindeer ate their cookies, milk and carrots.  And indeed they did.

Note the paper that says “reindeer carrots”.  Emma wrote Reindeer and Lexi carrots.  They were worried they wouldn’t know what they were for.

Check the full album out here.

Meet My Family – 1st Grade Style

Written by Amy on December 14th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

I hate being the one that’s posting artwork from their children but this little booklet she did at school amused me.

Love how she spelled policeman.

At the pool…apparently I wear a bikini and Scott has pink trunks.  And Lexi is TINY.

“We like to go to Taco Bell.”

What can I say? The 7 year old nailed it.

A New Music Category

Written by Amy on December 7th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

The four of us are sitting in my office.  I’m working, the girls are coloring and Scott is listening to music on his laptop.  He starts “I’ll Fly Away” by Ralph Stanley…a blue grass rendition if you’re not familiar.

Lexi: Why are you listening to that again? That’s your second time!

Me: Yeah, Lexi, let’s show Daddy some real music to listen to.

Lexi: Yeah! Not FARM music.

Happy Thanksgiving

Written by Amy on November 26th, 2009 at 9:41 am

Tuesday Lexi’s preschool had a small Thanksgiving program and dinner.  The tables were decorated with apples made into turkeys and feathers where the children had written what they were thankful for.  When we sat down, a mother that also goes to our church showed us where her son had said he was thankful for his little sister.  She was almost in tears reading it.  I was anxious to get Lexi’s, maybe she had said her sissy Emma or her Mommy.  I should have remembered I was talking about Lexi…

Everyone at the table had a laugh and I complained I must be doing something wrong.

Then Tuesday afternoon Lexi got dressed back in her Indian costume and I walked by and saw her doing this…I had her reenact it for you…

Really NOT sure what lesson about Indians she got that from.  I mean maybe they were talking about the other Indians.

But not to pick on Lexi!  You know I’m thankful for my little Indian princess (Scott really does have Cherokee Indian in his family).

On a serious note, God once again has been so good to us this year and I’m so thankful!

And it just isn’t right without pics of Emma too!  These are from her birthday party.

Happy Thanksgiving, Y’all!

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above

Tea Party

Written by Amy on November 14th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

IMG_8629

And no I’m not talking politics!  The girls had their combined birthday tea party with their friends last night.  They had 7 friends join them at the Celebration Cottage at Miss Libby’s for crafts, dress-up, tea and of course cake and presents!  This was a great birthday year.  All the girls were old enough to be left without parents and had a blast together on their own.  You can imagine that 9 girls 5-7 would be almost uncontrollable in a full room of dresses, shoes, gloves, wands, fans, hats and purses.  And an entire other room with jewelry, make-up and hair accessories.  And while they were somewhat controllable, they were pretty excited.

The only downside I saw about the whole night is none of the kids seemed hungry so actual tea time was probably the least interesting to them and also my camera died right before the cake!  I did what I could though.  In the interest of the The Internet I picked some pictures where the other girls’ faces weren’t in full view.  We still got some decent ones to share!

Halloween 2009

Written by Amy on October 31st, 2009 at 9:48 pm

Wow, what ANOTHER really long Saturday.  It started this morning at 6am with work of all things!  The rest of the morning progressed with the yard sale at Mom’s and back and forth with work.  Upload speeds completely failed me and I ended up having to go into work about 9:30.  I was back before too long though and we finished up the yard sale.  Once at home, I think Scott could see how tired I was and let me take a nap.  I was up just in time for him to head back to work and for us to head out for a full evening.

The original plan was for Emma to stay at IL’s to help and Lexi wanted to go to my parents’ neighborhood party so she could get on their hay ride.  Well, it ended up a tad different.  We found out Mom and Dad’s church was having a fall festival which included dinner.  I grabbed some pictures of the kids while we waited for Mom, Dad and Heather.  Once you see them, you’ll see they (especially Lexi) was having fun with that.  Once inside though, the kids completely freaked out on me and would not play a single thing and would hardly even speak a word. I guess a crowd of unknown people got the best of them.

After that was Scott’s parents’ house.  It was raining by the time we got over there but it did not stop the kids from grabbing umbrellas and going.  They made it two houses before Emma figured out it was not for her.  By the time Lexi got back, her hair, shoes and costume were absolutely soaked.  I told her it was quite fitting they wore their bathing suits under their costume.

I happened to have some leftovers from the yard sale and Lexi changed into that but Emma decided just to sport her bathing suit.  It WAS 70 degrees this evening!  Well, the girls must have been on a sugar high because they spent probably the next 30 minutes in a wrestling match.  Scott does that with them almost daily when they are feeling a little bored.  What’s funny is Lexi says, “Daddy always wins when he’s here but when he’s not *I* win!”  She was having the best time.  And Emma, she was getting beat but you couldn’t wipe the smile off her face either.

After a few trick or treaters trickled by we were going to head home but then the girls wanted to swing by my parents’ to trick or treat at their house.  It ended up being a full-on cookie factory.  Some great moments there too.  Emma took off her pants that irritated her…the exact reason they were in the yard sale to begin with…leaving her with an apron and her bathing suit sticking out the back.  Lexi gave us all a good laugh when she said her butt was sticking out.  Emma also had a really hard time picking out which cookie to eat.  She definitely gets her indecisiveness from me.

So here it is 16 hours later and even with my nap I’m ready to pass out and thankful we get an extra hour tonight!

See the full set on my Facebook album.

Scooby Doo, You Know We Got a Mystery to Solve

Written by Amy on October 28th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

Lexi (4): I saw this monster on TV before. He was purple and he had two arms on one side and no arms on the other.

Me: Was he scary?

Lexi: No.

Me: Well, if he’s scary, we can turn the channel if Scooby Doo is on.

Lexi: No!  They just solve mysteries, that’s all.

When Your Clothes Are on Fire

Written by Amy on October 20th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Emma has been going through fire safety at school.  The other night we talked about what happens when there is a fire.  Emma said we need to have a plan and a meeting point.  We decided on the mailbox and oh yeah, don’t touch the door handle if your door is closed.  Sounded like the routine fire safety.

A few minutes after Emma came home today the girls are getting settled in.  I randomly hear Emma tell Lexi, “Do you know what you do when your clothes are on fire?”  I then see her stand up straight and be still for a beat and then drop to the floor and roll once around.

She tells Lexi to try it so she knows what to do.  The video below picks up right after that.  I think Lexi says she doesn’t want to right at the beginning and walks away and Emma decides to go get a snack.

It cracks me up that she stops, drops and rolls and Emma says “Goood.” And then they both just walk away like it’s so normal. And Emma at the end saying “That’s what you do when your clothes are on fire! For real life!”

Lexi-isms in Bitstrips

Written by Amy on October 18th, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Ok, so my friend Denise pointed me to Bitstrips, a site to create your own characters and comic strips.  The only thing I could think of to do was pull out some Lexi-isms.  Not all of them fit the length/format of a strip but this one I thought would do.  Seems to be more funny to me in the blog post but it’s really cute seeing us in comic strip form!
